Earlier this week, an important announcement was made at UNLV: a $14 million grant from philanthropist Kirk Kerkorian’s Lincy Foundation will fund the creation of The Lincy Institute. According to UNLV’s announcement, The Lincy Institute will specialize in identifying and acquiring local, state and national grants to improve our state’s quality of life, which includes areas such as child and family advocacy, education, health care, homelessness, mental health issues and physical disabilities. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, I had the pleasure of attending an important announcement in downtown Reno. The Harrah’s Foundation presented an $80,000 scholarship grant to Hug High School. Thanks to the generosity of the Harrah’s Foundation, Hug High graduates may qualify for up to $20,000 in educational assistance over a four-year period. Wednesday’s presentation was yet another affirmation of the long and productive partnership that Hug High has enjoyed with Harrah’s, and, as well, is another exciting development spurred by the success of the All Students College Educated in Nevada Today (ASCENT) program.
