On Wednesday, July 22, I had the pleasure of joining the Kiwanis Club of Reno at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino. The luncheon began in the best way possible, with a spirited Kiwanian rendition of “Home Means Nevada.” I gave a brief talk about the University’s priorities for the future, as well as our current budget situation. I fielded several excellent questions from the gathered members, and was heartened to hear that so many Kiwanis Club members are enthusiastic about our future. Continue Reading »

I was privileged to spend some time with Walter Cronkite once a year for 15 years when he would visit the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Everyone in my generation recalls watching Walter tell us about the Vietnam War, the assassination of two Kennedys and Martin Luther King, the first Moon landing (his favorite topic), the tall ships of the Bicentennial and many other historic events, and being reassured by his calm, thoughtful presentation. He truly was the most trusted man in America and perhaps the last nearly universally trusted man in America. But I want to share my personal observations of the man. Continue Reading »

Last week I made the journey to San Francisco to attend the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) 2009 Summit for Advancement Leaders. There were several good speakers, including Tim O’Reilly, the founder and president of O’Reilly Media and Web 2.0 expert. The words of Robert Reich, professor of public policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and the nation’s 22nd Secretary of Labor, struck a particularly resonant cord with me. I’ve followed and enjoyed Bob Reich’s writings for years, and his message on the “demand side” seemed to have direct application to how we do our business in higher education. Continue Reading »

The respected Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke recently wrote about the change of coaches, the departure of players and the specter of an NCAA investigation at the University of Southern California. Plaschke took aim at several people, including USC President Steven B. Sample, questioning why the institution, its athletic director and its president had not been more transparent and available for comment during a time of upheaval for the Trojans’ men’s basketball program. I have always believed that transparency with all stakeholders, including the media, is a good thing. Continue Reading »

On July 1, Dan Klaich officially assumed his duties as the tenth Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education, following mid-June’s announcement that he had been unanimously appointed to the position by the Board of Regents. Dan is a native Nevadan and his history on our campus is worth noting. Dan is a 1972 graduate of our University, and in 1971 served as ASUN president. His wife, Denise, is also a graduate of our University. Dan has provided a thoughtful and progressive voice to matters of higher education in our state for his entire adult life, and I wish to take a moment to offer my best thoughts as he begins this well-deserved appointment. For an interesting look at the history of ASUN, including a list of all of the past presidents of ASUN, check out the link below.
